Ruby and Cubic Zirconia Ring

Ruby is a beautiful deep pink to red coloured stone. It is a form of the mineral corundum. A red corundum specimen is called a ruby; a blue corundum specimen is called a sapphire (although sapphires may also occur in pink, blue, green, violet, gray, yellow, plus other colours). Rubies are very hard; they are 9 hardness on the Moh’s scale. Only diamonds are harder.

Ruby is mentioned in the Bible as the most precious of all gemstones. It is a stone that has been worn by kings and queens throughout the ages. Ancient Egyptians believed that the ruby could provide physical protection and good fortune. Some ancient cultures believed that the ruby contained the bloodline of humanity, others believed that some rubies contained an inner fire, and that this fire could sometimes boil water and melt wax. The ancients believed that the ruby could provide heat and warmth. One must assume that the ancients based these beliefs on the fire red or blood red colour of the ruby. 

Today, some believe that a ruby may make one feel giving and happy. It is said to enhance your ability to be warm and caring. 

Cubic zirconia or CZ is actually a very rare mineral in nature called zirconium dioxide. Most cubic zirconia is created as a diamond replacement. It is prized for its fiery brilliance, it very closely resembles a diamond. Most gemologists must use different tests to see if the item is diamond or cz. Included in these tests are water density tests, scratch tests (CZ is slightly softer than diamonds), light dispersion tests, UV shortwave tests, and others, it is not possible to tell diamond from cz with the naked eye. 

During the growth process, certain metal oxides may be added to produce different colors of CZ. Diamonds are also available in these other colors, but more rarely. Included in the CZ lineup of unusual colors are brown or coffee color (caused by adding titanium), canary or yellow color (cerium), orange (more cerium), red (even more cerium), lavender (neodymium), blue, pink (erbium), or green (chromium). With the popularity of colored diamonds increasing and their price out of this world, the popularity of cz has increased immensely over the past few years. 

Not everyone can afford a big diamond, but CZ not makes it easier for us to all add some “bling” to our sense of style and fashion. In fact, many CZ stones are more brilliant than their diamond counterparts. CZ has come into its own as a diamond replacement, and a fine fashion accessory.

This ring requires special care - exposure to water and other chemicals, such as lotions or perfumes, will damage it over time. If you polish the jewellery, avoid polishing the stone itself. A silver-cleaning dip should never be used with this piece.
