Ruby is a beautiful deep pink to red coloured stone. It is a form of the mineral corundum. A red corundum specimen is called a ruby; a blue corundum specimen is called a sapphire (although sapphires may also occur in pink, blue, green, violet, gray, yellow, plus other colours). Rubies are very hard; they are 9 hardness on the Moh’s scale. Only diamonds are harder.
Ruby is mentioned in the Bible as the most precious of all gemstones. It is a stone that has been worn by kings and queens throughout the ages. Ancient Egyptians believed that the ruby could provide physical protection and good fortune. Some ancient cultures believed that the ruby contained the bloodline of humanity, others believed that some rubies contained an inner fire, and that this fire could sometimes boil water and melt wax. The ancients believed that the ruby could provide heat and warmth. One must assume that the ancients based these beliefs on the fire red or blood red colour of the ruby.
Today, some believe that a ruby may make one feel giving and happy. It is said to enhance your ability to be warm and caring.
Pearls are formed when a piece of sand or other irritant finds its way into an oyster. The oyster begins to secrete a smooth hard crystalline substance called nacre around the irritant to protect itself. As long as the irritant remains, the oyster will continue to produce this nacre, layer upon layer. It will take several years to produce a 3 to 4mm pearl.
Cultured pearls or saltwater pearls are pearls that have a little help from man. Man will place an irritant into an oyster, usually a piece of polished shell. Cultured pearls will normally be produced in a farm setting. Only 50% or less will produce a viable pearl. As the oysters are very temperamental, the pearls they produce will never be a mass market item.
Freshwater pearls are grown in fresh water mollusks. They are less lustrous than salt water pearls, but are easier to grow. They are often more of a freeform shape than other pearls.
The most common colors of pearls are silver/ white, rose, cream, gold, and blue/grey. Color choice is mostly up to personal preference. More unusual colors are available, such as blue, purple, black, and green; these colors may be caused by different minerals and nutrients present in the water. Tahiti was the original place for black pearls due to minerals present in that area. Pearls may also be color enhanced. Some believe pearls are for wisdom and that they may help one with inspirational thought.
