Petrified wood is the common name for wood that has turned to stone. Wood begins a petrification process once it is buried in sediments with very little exposure to oxygen. Overtime, the mineral rich water from the soil will replace the organic cells of the wood with inorganic elements like carbon (black), cobalt (green/blue), chromium (green/blue), copper, (green/blue), iron oxides (red/brown/yellow), manganese (pink and orange), manganese oxides (black or yellow) and silica ( white/grey/blueish white) to name a few. This process can happen very quickly, in as little as 1000 years, and it is the combination of these minerals and colours that creates a truly unique fossil specimen each time.
The most famous petrified wood is the Araucaria wood, which is a descendant of the Northfolk pine. The wood is between 190 million years old and 225 million years old and is considered the oldest wood in the world. It often fossilizes into beautiful reds, pinks, yellows and other bright colours. This type of wood is found in the USA, mainly in Arizona, however petrified wood specimens may also be found in Utah, Oregon, South Dakota, California, Washington, and other states.
In the brown colour range of petrified wood is the high quality petrified wood out of the Queensland area of Australia. These brown wood specimens often contain nice wood grain detailing, and are approximately 100-145 million years old. A type of coniferous petrified pine wood, this particular type of petrified wood is increasingly rare, with very few mining permits awarded each year.
Another popular species of petrified wood is the Monkey Puzzle tree, which comes in many colours including browns, white, black, red and other combinations. These specimens are from the Triassic age, and are approximately 220 million years old. A type of Araucaria petrified pine wood, this particular type of tree is commonly referred to as the "Monkey Puzzle Tree" and is found in Madagascar.
