This unusual stone is actually the fossilized remains of coral that lived on the ocean floor hundreds of millions of years ago. Although several different types of coral are found fossilized today, what is most exciting to rock cutters and collectors are the unusual colors and patterns that are preserved. The fossil corals are prized by rock cutters as no two pieces look exactly alike.
Coral is a semi-precious gemstone which occurs in several colors including red, black, white, and pink. The coral grew in branches that look like underwater trees.
Coral jewellery has been used for adornment since prehistoric times. Coral inlays and coral jewelry have been found from the Iron Age. Coral also has a history of religious significance. Coral is one of the seven treasures in Buddhist scriptures, and coral, when worn touching against the skin, was long thought to be a powerful talisman that could stop bleeding, protect from evil spirits, and ward off bad weather.
This fossil requires special care - exposure to water and other chemicals, such as lotions or perfumes, will damage it over time. If you polish the jewellery, avoid polishing the fossil itself. A silver-cleaning dip should never be used with this piece.
