This is an unusual gold colored substance, some believe it to be a tektite. It is believed to have been formed when a meteorite hit the inhospitable Western Sahara Desert and exploded above it 26 million years ago. The explosion and impact of the meteorite catapulted molten rock and sand into the stratosphere creating a glass-like substance that formed as the material made its way back to earth.
Some pieces appear to be pitted like meteorites, others look to have been polished and blasted by sand storms and other earthly phenomena over time. Unlike glass, it must be heated over 500 degrees warmer than regular glass to melt. When red hot, if dropped into cold water it will not easily shatter. It is more similar to a stone than glass. Traces of iridium, a mineral found in many meteorites, lead some scientists to believe the glass is a tektite but not all scientists agree on this. They do agree that desert glass has unusual properties that are not easily explained.
Desert Glass is effective for those who do not feel fully connected to the earth. Spiritually the stone carries powerful sun energy and abundant life force, acting as a protective amulet for any journey, both physical or metaphysical. It helps one to go beyond boundaries of what is known and across frontiers of consciousness.
