The most common of the creatures found in the Brule Formation is the oreodon.  This was a small creature, similar to a goat or sheep.  Other creatures found in the Brule formation include:

  • Rhinoceros: hyracodon nebrascensai: It was a “running rhinoceros”.  It had long, slim legs, and had 3 toes on both the front and hind legs.  Fossil evidence shows that they did not run fast enough to evade all predators as the fossils are often missing noses, chins, and backs of skulls.  It measured up to 5 feet long (1.5m), skulls may be up to 12 inches long.
  • Horse: mesohippus pardi: One of the earliest horses, it was about the size of a dog, about 24 inches (60 cm) at the shoulders, its skull was about 8 inches long.  It resembled modern horses very closely in the skeleton; it was just a lot smaller.  It also had 3 toes; it had not developed a single hoof as yet.
  • Camel: Poebrotherium: This was a short camel, only 30 inches (75 cm) tall at the shoulder, but it had a very long neck.  It was a thin creature; skulls are often thin looking.  It had hooves unlike modern camels that have broad pads.
  • Deer: Leptomeryx: This was a very evolved deer, it had advanced foot assembly and is considered a close ancestor to deer, cattle, goats, sheep, giraffes, and antelope.

Other creatures found more rarely include squirrels, mice, ictops, titanotheres, prairie dogs, beavers, and rabbits.  All of the above creatures are between 25 to 40 million years old.  A lot of work goes into finding, cleaning, and preparing the pieces for display.  The pieces are very unusual and rare which makes them true collector items.
