Plated Druzy Cufflinks

Druzy is one of the most unusual and rare mineral specimens as it is created with the help of various minerals and dyes to create an unique array of colours and patterns.

To start, the highest grade quartz geodes are selected. The top of each is carefully polished away until the crystals inside are exposed. The piece is then treated with a dye and/or mineral to acheive the unique colours. In this particular case, the stone was dyed black, then plated with platinum to give it a luminescent shine. This plating treatment is done via an electrostatic process whereby the geodes are put into a vacuum and charged opposite the platinum. Heat is applied. The platinum is then put into the vacuum and it "clings" to the geode.  The piece is then turned over and the process is repeated, so that all areas are covered. The platinum, when charged and treated in a vacuum environment, will combine with the geode and changes the colour to a magnificent opalescent shine.

Exposure to water and other chemicals, such as shampoos or perfumes, will damage it over time. If you polish the jewellery, avoid polishing the stone itself. A silver-cleaning dip should never be used with this piece.
