Fossil Sand Dollar Pendant

The sand dollar fossils are very similar to modern day sand dollars. The sand dollar fossils are about 6 million years old. The proper name for these fossils is encope californicus. There are several different species of sand dollars that have evolved over millions of years. 

The holes in the center of the sand dollar are what the creature fed through. Small organisms would pass through the holes allowing the creature to feed. The elaborate pattern on the sand dollar that resembles a flower was the pattern of the creatures pores.

Exposure to water and other chemicals, such as lotions or perfumes, will damage it over time. If you polish the jewellery, avoid polishing the fossil itself. A silver-cleaning dip should never be used with this piece.
