Dactylioceras Ammonite

The dactylioceras has the shape that is most commonly associated with the ammonite fossil. The coils keep wrapping around and around, the ribs are often raised and distinct. The dactylioceras are found in several different formations.

Black Shale with Flat Dactylioceras: The dactylioceras is a gold colored imprint of the dactylioceras fossil on black shale. On occasion other ammonites are present as well such as hildoceras and harpoceras. These ammonite plates are about 170 million years old.

3D Dactylioceras: These are often preserved in a spherical pod.  The pods are then broken open keeping the outer pod intact so that the open section shows the treasure inside.  The one side is the actual fossil; the opposite side is the impression or imprint of the fossil.  This shows the positive and negative of the fossil.  Sometimes this formation is cut in half and polished to show the inner chambers of the fossil.  This dactylioceras formation is between 135 and 195 million years old.  

Brown Dactylioceras: This is a brown 3-dimensional fossil.  These are very attractive as the fossils are an earthy color with excellent preservation of the swirls.  These are sometimes found in multiple fossil plates. These are also between 135 and 195 million years old.

Exposure to water and other chemicals, such as cleaning products or aerosols, will damage it over time. If you polish this product, use a dry cloth only, or an air duster that does not contain any disinfectant or other chemicals.
