Blue Peruvian opal is a relatively new and rare find. It is a very translucent to opaque blue or green stone with color similar to the Caribbean Sea. It is sometimes called blue opal. On occasion dendritic black patterns may be found in the stones, as well as browns and other minerals that add to the character of the stones. Peruvian opal may also be found in shades of soft pink.

The Peruvian opal has soft relaxing energies. Legend says that it takes the tension out of communication and helps ideas flow freely. It softens the impact of stress from the outside world and can help one to release the trauma of old wounds. It facilitates facing the future with a tranquil healing nature. This stone is reported to be good for quieting the mind and as an aid to sleep.

Pearls are formed when a piece of sand or other irritant finds its way into an oyster. The oyster begins to secrete a smooth hard crystalline substance called nacre around the irritant to protect itself. As long as the irritant remains, the oyster will continue to produce this nacre, layer upon layer. It will take several years to produce a 3 to 4mm pearl.

Cultured pearls or saltwater pearls are pearls that have a little help from man. Man will place an irritant into an oyster, usually a piece of polished shell. Cultured pearls will normally be produced in a farm setting. Only 50% or less will produce a viable pearl. As the oysters are very temperamental, the pearls they produce will never be a mass market item.

Freshwater pearls are grown in fresh water mollusks. They are less lustrous than salt water pearls, but are easier to grow. They are often more of a freeform shape than other pearls.

The most common colors of pearls are silver/ white, rose, cream, gold, and blue/grey. Color choice is mostly up to personal preference. More unusual colors are available, such as blue, purple, black, and green; these colors may be caused by different minerals and nutrients present in the water. Tahiti was the original place for black pearls due to minerals present in that area. Pearls may also be color enhanced.  Some believe pearls are for wisdom and that they may help one with inspirational thought

Topaz is a high temperature mineral that is often found in igneous rocks. Topaz comes in many different colors including yellow, brownish-yellow, pink, green, orange, colorless and blue.  The dark blue topaz is called London Blue topaz while the light blue is called Sky Blue topaz.  Topaz has been prized as a gemstone throughout the ages.  Blue topaz may be found along the western coast of North America but the primary source remains South America and Russia.

Blue topaz may also be used as a birthstone for November, but it is one of several options. Some believe that blue topaz will aid in tissue regeneration and enhance the metabolism.  They also believe it may enhance self confidence and may help one to gain wisdom and insight more easily.  Whatever your beliefs, may you enjoy your piece of blue topaz.
