Fossilized Oreodon Skull Specimen
The creature’s proper name is Merycoidodon Culbertsoni, but they are commonly called oreodons. The oreodon was a small mammal, similar to a goat or sheep. The large front teeth in the skull give it a pig-like appearance. The fossil oreodon pieces are approximately 25 million to 50 million years old. Like other fossils, the oreodon require a lot of work in cleaning and preparing the pieces for display. Sometimes jawbones, skulls, and other bones must be reconstructed as erosion has worn away the piece. Left too long on the surface of the earth erosion eventually destroys the pieces.

Exposure to water and other chemicals, such as cleaning products or aerosols, will damage it over time. If you polish the stone, use a dry cloth only, or an air duster that does not contain any disinfectant or other chemicals.
