A favorite material of ancient cultures, amethyst has endured the ages as one of man's most prized possessions.  Amethyst ranges in color from a very light lavender to a deep violet shade of purple sometimes with slight hues of pink and red. Banded amethyst or cape amethyst may have lines of agate or chalcedony running through the amethyst. This may also be called chevron amethyst.  

The main Canadian source of amethyst is near Thunder Bay, Ontario where mining has taken place intermittently over the last one hundred years. Scientists believe the amethyst find near Thunder Bay to be over one billion years old. Amethyst is found worldwide and has the distinction of being the birthstone for February and the official gemstone of the province of Ontario.

In the Middle Ages it was believed that amethyst would protect one from drunkenness and protect crops from evil spirits, blight and locusts. Some believe that amethyst has calming and protective qualities and that wearing amethyst will increase inspiration and intuition. Whatever your beliefs, may you enjoy your piece of amethyst.

Generally speaking, druse is a term that refers to any rock formation where an irregular cavity allows well-formed tiny crystal structures such as quartz, feldspar or other mineral crystals to grow. These cavities give tiny crystals a place to form over millions of years.The end result is a triumph of Mother Nature called drusy or druzy.

Druse or drusy (druzy) can be found world wide, but they are more commonly associated with agates and various types of quartzes. Druses come in a wide range of colors including green, purple, blue, brown, and pinks. The color will vary depending on the other minerals associated with the crystals. On occasion, druse can be plated by various materials and metals to form highly unusual and sought after pieces. Some plated druse varieties include druses plated with copper, titanium, platinum, opalescent, gold, silver, plus many others.

Druses are sought after by collectors for their unusual formations and colors. Some believe druses can help with many ailments and afflictions. They believe that the small crystals may help deliver positive energy to the body, blues will help to calm the mind, violet will help with your creative side, lighter purples and pinks may help soothe and relax you, yellows and browns help strengthen the body, and all other colors may help you be energized in some way, some believe the drusy may help you with your dreams. Druses are considered by some to give you an energy boost. Whatever your beliefs, may you enjoy your drusy.
