Ancient people believed amber was solidified sunshine or the petrified tears of god, however amber is actually fossilized pine tree sap estimated from 20 million to 200 million years old - most amber is around 50 million years old.
Ancient forests were believed to be very dense and only the strongest trees would survive. If a tree were wounded it would produce healing resin or sap in great quantities. The pinus succinifera or "Amber Pine" as it was commonly called was one of these trees. Through the passage of time this sap hardened and fossilized. Amber may be found in several different colors, from creamy yellows and oranges to rich reds and browns. Amber may be found with pine needles, oak buds, leaves and sunspangles (inclusions caused by heat which resemble fish scales), however no inclusion is as sought-after as amber with insects preserved inside.
On occasion, amber is found with insects preserved inside, sometimes flies, ticks, fleas, mites, spiders, ants, beetles, mosquitoes, worms, pseudoscorpions, plus many other items including feathers, hair, water drops, blood, and sometimes even creatures as large as frogs and even lizards have been found preserved inside amber. This is of course very rare.
Insects are among the more fascinating of the inclusions in amber. Only a small percentage of amber insects are preserved well enough to show off the fine details of these insects. On occasion more than one insect may be trapped inside a single piece of amber. This may show how they interacted with each other.
Found in Poland, Amber is a powerful healer that relieves pain and stress. Amber is also believed to boost energy through the solar plexus and third eye chakras, as well as release fear of judgement and serve as a symbol of success.

Amber requires special care - exposure to water and other chemicals, such as shampoos or perfumes, will damage it over time. If you polish the jewellery, avoid polishing the amber itself. A silver-cleaning dip should never be used with this piece.
Fun Fact: Did you know that the movie Jurassic Park was based on the idea that mosquitoes that had bitten dinosaurs had become trapped in amber? The insects with the dinosaur blood or DNA were then used by modern scientists to reconstruct the dinosaur from the DNA up. While this premise remains science-fiction today, amber with insects inside is a great gift for any Jurassic Park fan.
