Gemstone skulls have a history full of mystery and intrigue. While we sell only the most beautiful skulls carved by artists around the world, modern carving practices, especially the carving of skulls, is done in homage to the mysteries of the past.
The art of carving crystal skulls is a nod to tradition. There are perhaps a dozen rare crystal skulls discovered throughout the mid 19th century that have fueled intense interest and controversy among archaeologists, scientists, spiritualists, and museum officials for more than a century.
Selenite is an alternate name for the mineral gypsum. The word Selenite comes from the Greek selenites, meaning moon stone or moon rock. Selenite is a natural insulator and will appear much warmer to the touch than other crystals. It is a very soft stone, and may come in several different crystal formations. Included are selenites called desert roses, these are flower resembling selenites that have tiny blade-like crystals, sometimes coming in browns, greens, beige, grey, or white. Fibrous selenite, also called satin spar, has a chatoyant flash to it, it may be found in crystal formations several meters long. This satin spar selenite is sometimes made into unusual decorator pieces. Clear selenite crystals may occur in smaller sizes.
Selenite is a soft stone, therefore there will be natural imperfections.
