Ammolite

Fossil history in brilliant colour.

Explore ammolite and discover the remarkable iridescent colours preserved in fossilized ammonite shell.

What Gives Ammolite Its Colour?

Ammolite is an iridescent gem material obtained from fossilised ammonite shells. Canadian Ammolite is closely associated with southern Alberta, where these ancient marine animals were preserved in deposits from the Cretaceous Period.

Its colour comes from light interacting with microscopic layers of aragonite in the fossil shell. These layers create interference effects, producing colours that can change with the lighting and viewing angle. The colours and patterns vary between specimens, giving each piece its own appearance.
