Orthoceras

Straight-shelled fossils from ancient seas.

Explore Orthoceras fossils, recognizable by their elongated shell forms and striking contrast when preserved in dark stone.

What Is an Orthoceras Fossil?

Fossils commonly sold as Orthoceras preserve the straight, tapering shells of extinct marine cephalopods. Cephalopods are the group of animals that includes today’s squid, octopuses and nautiluses.

These ancient shells contained internal chambers. In a fossil exposed by cutting or polishing, the divisions between chambers can appear as repeated lines along the shell. Look closely at a specimen to see how much of this structure has been preserved.
