The Many Ways Ancient Life Is Preserved

Fossils are evidence of past life, and they take many forms. Body fossils preserve parts of organisms, such as shells, bones and leaves. Trace fossils record their activity, including footprints and burrows.

Fossilisation can happen in different ways. Minerals may fill tiny spaces within remains or replace the original material. Other fossils preserve impressions, or form when sediment fills a natural mould left behind by an organism.

These different forms of preservation help explain why fossils vary so much in appearance. Looking closely at a specimen can reveal details of its original structure and clues about how it was preserved. Together, fossils help scientists piece together the history of life and ancient environments.
