One of prehistory's most iconic fossils.

Explore trilobite fossils and discover the detailed forms of marine arthropods that lived in ancient oceans hundreds of millions of years ago.

What Is a Trilobite?

Trilobites were marine arthropods that first appeared around 520 million years ago, long before dinosaurs. These extinct animals had a hard outer skeleton and a recognisable head, segmented body and tail.

Their name means “three lobes,” referring to the central ridge and the two areas on either side of their bodies. Different trilobites developed a remarkable variety of shapes, including rounded outlines, prominent eyes and elaborate spines.
