Fossilized Gastropods

The gastropods are part of a very diverse group of creatures, the mollusks.  Gastropods include all snails and slugs.  The gastropod shell may be coiled or uncoiled.  The whorl is the complete coil of the shell; the aperture is the opening to the outside.  Scientists use these features as well as the size, shape, growth lines, columns and other features to classify the shells.  Most gastropods have a heavy shell that is not easily broken or destroyed.  This shell is usually all that remains of the ancient creature.  The shell is almost always made of aragonite, the same mineral as many other fossil shells.  The gastropod, if threatened, could remove its head and foot into the opening or aperture.  Many gastropods would have a horny or calcareous disc on the side of their foot that was used to seal off the aperture when the foot was withdrawn, this protected them from predators.

Exposure to water and other chemicals, such as cleaning products or aerosols, will damage it over time. If you polish this product, use a dry cloth only, or an air duster that does not contain any disinfectant or other chemicals.
