This Zimbabwe Green Petrified Wood slice is extremely rare. Wood from Gokwe is desired by collectors and difficult to acquire. We work with a team of Zimbabweans who collect pieces for us by hand. To enter the area to collect specimens requires a tithe to the local chief. This is the first specimen we have carried in our store in the last decade! It is likely you will not see these pieces again.
Petrified wood is the common name for wood that has turned to stone. Almost all of today's modern tree (wood) types have ancient fossil remnants that we can study. The patterns on the different types of wood appear unchanged from their modern counterparts.
The most famous petrified wood from Zimbabwe is the Woodworthia from Gokwe, Zimbabwe, a primitive conifer tree. The attractive green coloring sometimes found in Gokwe Wood is from Chromium deposits.
Petrified wood is often found underground. Fossil wood chips at the surface will indicate a find, and the soil will then be dug up to reveal the fossil wood. Erosion has typically already destroyed the wood close to the surface, so it is exciting for the collector to dig up petrified wood that may be preserved below the earth.
Like other fossils, the various wood types require a lot of work in cleaning, polishing, and preparing the pieces for display. May you enjoy your fossil specimen, as it is a scientific find as well as a link to our distant past.  Fossils are to be treasured and preserved for future generations.
