The spitoniceras was a very large ammonite fossil. These pieces may have beautiful ribbing on the exterior, but they are often cut open to reveal very complex growth structures and chambers on the interior of the creature. These may sometimes come with barite, calcite, and other crystals as well as with iron pyrite, often on a contrasting black background. They are very rare and unusual pieces, and are sometimes used as home decorator pieces.

The spitoniceras range in age from 65 million years old to 135 million years old. Like other ammonites, the spitoniceras lived in the oceans and in shallow seas. Scientists believe that they behaved a lot like the nautilus shell of today, and that this is their closest relative.  A lot of work has been done to clean the fossil to its original beauty and to prepare the piece for display.

Exposure to water and other chemicals, such as cleaning products or aerosols, will damage it over time. If you polish the fossil, use a dry cloth only, or an air duster that does not contain any disinfectant or other chemicals.
