Scenic jasper and picture jasper are names that are given to stones where the stone cutter intentionally carved the rough rock to create a landscape type scene. Stones that have a scene are most often forms of jaspers, so the cut stone is called “scenic jasper” even though it is actually a different type of jasper.
This particular scenic jasper was cut from a piece of Owyhee Lake jasper. This type of jasper is sometimes called the King of the Scenic Jaspers due to its great colors and patterns. It is found in the mountains of Oregon, but has not been actively mined for quite some time. Most pieces today come from old collections.
Jasper is believed by some to strengthen as well as heal the physical body. Various jaspers may also help with allergies and the immune system.
