Rainbow calcite is a very unusual stone. It is prized for its varied colors, bright blues, greens, blacks, reds and browns form varied stripes and patterns on the stones.  A new stone find, it has been on the market since 2003.

When geologists asked to verify the new stone they asked for permission to visit the mine, and the miners denied them access to the mine. This fueled speculation the stone may be man made. Tests on the stone were inconclusive, as the stabilization process that strengthens the stone also alters it slightly, rendering the tests inconclusive. The mine itself is closely protected by the miners; they mine by hand to avoid exploitation of the mine by dynamite and other destructive means. What better way to protect a mine than keep its location a closely guarded secret. Real stone or enhanced stone, further tests are required to solve the mystery.

Blue Topaz is a high temperature mineral that is often found in igneous rocks. Topaz comes in many different colors including yellow, brownish-yellow, pink, green, orange, colorless and blue.  The dark blue topaz is called London Blue topaz while the light blue is called Sky Blue topaz.  Topaz has been prized as a gemstone throughout the ages.  Blue topaz may be found along the western coast of North America but the primary source remains South America and Russia.

Blue topaz may also be used as a birthstone for November, but it is one of several options. Some believe that blue topaz will aid in tissue regeneration and enhance the metabolism.  They also believe it may enhance self confidence and may help one to gain wisdom and insight more easily.

A favorite material of ancient cultures, amethyst has endured the ages as one of man's most prized possessions.  Amethyst ranges in color from a very light lavender to a deep violet shade of purple sometimes with slight hues of pink and red. Banded amethyst or cape amethyst may have lines of agate or chalcedony running through the amethyst. This may also be called chevron amethyst.

The main Canadian source of amethyst is near Thunder Bay, Ontario where mining has taken place intermittently over the last one hundred years.  Scientists believe the amethyst find near Thunder Bay to be over one billion years old.  Amethyst is found worldwide and has the distinction of being the birthstone for February and the official gemstone of the province of Ontario.

Green amethyst is amethyst where the amethyst mineral has a higher than normal iron content within the stone. This iron content causes some of the stones to be green when found, although this is rare. More often, the natural amethyst is heat treated to produce the green color. Only certain amethyst stones from mines with a higher iron mineral content in the amethyst will produce the green color change.
