This unusual specimen is a rare example of an oviraptor dinosaur egg. This is a large, long egg with a relatively smooth surface, found in the Xixia Basin in the Henan Province of China. They are between 100 and 135 million years old, from the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era. Oviraptor egg nests may vary from 8-12 eggs, but single eggs are more commonly found.
Fun fact: the oviraptor is a relative to the velociraptor, the dinosaur made famous by the movie Jurassic Park.
