The Eurypterids are an extremely rare and unusual fossil creature.  They range in age from 350 million years old to 440 million years old.  They had 6 pairs of appendages, the first were antennae, the next four pairs were for walking, and the last pair were for swimming or paddling.  The tail had a barbed end, sometimes preserved with the pointed spikes intact.  They were a carnivorous predator, feeding off of anything they could exploit in the marine environment they inhabited.  They were found in both salt and fresh water.  The shale that they are in is sensitive to the oils in the skin.  The shale must sit out for one year before they can be cleaned or the fossil may be destroyed.  Scorpions and horseshoe crabs are the closest relatives to the Eurypterid around today.

Exposure to water and other chemicals, such as cleaning products or aerosols, will damage it over time. If you polish the fossil, use a dry cloth only, or an air duster that does not contain any disinfectant or other chemicals.
