Copal or Copalite is the term given to organic resins that are not old enough (i.e. youger than 100,000 years) to have fossilized and hardened sufficiently to become amber. This natural Copal is from Cap d'Ambre, Madagascar. Madagascar Copal has cognac red to pale yellow color and every color in between. There are often interesting inclusions such as spider, mosquitoes and other bugs. Madagascar Copal can vary in age from a couple of thousand years to one million years old. It is great study material for budding paleontologists. Copal is a name given to tree resin that is particularly identified with the aromatic resins used by the cultures of pre-Colombian Mesoamerica as ceremonially burned incense and other purposes. More generally, the term Copal describes resinous substances in an intermediate stage of polymerization and hardening between "gummier" resins and amber. The word copal is derived from the Nahuati Language word copalli, meaning "incences".
Copal is said to be useful for assisting with stress disorders and depression.
