Overtime, the mineral rich water from the soil will replace the organic cells of the wood with inorganic elements like carbon (black), cobalt (green/blue), chromium (green/blue), copper, (green/blue), iron oxides (red/brown/yellow), manganese (pink and orange), manganese oxides (black or yellow) and silica ( white/grey/blueish white) to name a few. This process can happen very quickly, in as little as 1000 years, and it is the combination of these minerals and colours that creates a truly unique fossil specimen each time.
Araucaria is the name of a conifer species that co-existed with dinosaurs and other creatures of the Mesozoic era, about 190-220 million years ago, and is a predecessor or the modern Norfolk Pines trees. This Araucaria tree fossil was found in the Petrified Wood belt of the United States, which spans Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. This type of petrified wood often comes from just outside the petrified forest in Arizona, USA. Araucaria petrified wood is easily recognizable by its beautiful bright colours like red, pink and yellow.
