Agoudal meteorites were discovered in 2000, in the Agoudal area near the small town of Imilchil in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco. Imichil is famous for the Betrothal Festival, “Souk Aamor Agdoud N'Oulmghenni,” which is a marriage festival that occurs once a year. The legend of the festival states two people from different tribes fell in love but were not allowed to marry. Torn with sadness, they cried to death. As a result two lakes formed from their tears high in the mountains. These are the lakes Isli and Tislit. Scientists believe that these two lakes formed when a meteorite split into two pieces, and created a dual impact crater that later formed the two tear-shaped lakes.
The agoudal meteorite is classified as a Type IIAB iron meteorite, which is also known as a hexahedrite. Hexahedrites are among the most rare of iron meteorites, and are classified as having a nickel content below 5.8%, which is a very low concentration for iron meteorites. The best quality hexahedrite meteorites will have a nickel concentration just below 5.3%. Most agoudal meteorites have a nickel content of 5.5%.

Exposure to water and other chemicals, such as cleaning products or aerosols, may damage the meteorite or cause it to rust over time. If you polish the meteorite, use a dry cloth only, or an air duster that does not contain any disinfectant or other chemicals.
