Green amethyst is amethyst where the amethyst mineral has a higher than normal iron content within the stone. This iron content causes some of the stones to be green when found, although this is rare. More often, the natural amethyst is heat treated to produce the green color. Only certain amethyst stones from mines with a higher iron mineral content in the amethyst will produce the green color change.

In the Middle Ages it was believed that amethyst would protect crops from evil spirits, blight and locusts. Some believe that amethyst has calming and protective qualities and that wearing amethyst will increase inspiration and intuition.
