Extinct Marine Animals Rare Tooth

Extinct Marine Animals Rare Tooth

Plesiosaurus, Rocks and Gems Canada, Fossil

Fossil Friday!
We introduce new to our stores the Plesiosaurus teeth!!! The Plesiosaurus was a marine reptile which existed during the early Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era. (66- 252 million years ago). This reptile is believed to have evolved from the triassic Nothosaurus.

The fossils of the Plesiosaurus were discovered in England in the year 1821. At that time, very few prehistoric marine vertebrates were known to man. Due to this, any bones which even remotely resembled the Plesiosauras were ascribed to it. As a result, defining the Plesiosaurus became very difficult. As more and more aquatic reptile fossils were discovered, they were inspected more carefully. Subsequently the genus Plesiosaurus became better organised.
The Plesiosaurus could grow to about 3 - 4 meters in length. Its weight is debatable, but is estimated at about 150 - 350 ponds. The size was small compared to some of the late Jurassic and early Cretaceous Plesiosaurus such as the Kronosaurus which attained a length of over 10 meters. As compared to its contemporary Plesiosaurus, the Plesiosaurus was of average size.

Ammonite fossilization with Iron Pyrite...

Ammonite fossilization with Iron Pyrite...

Fossil Friday!

The quenstedoceras fossils are approximately 135 - 195 million years old, found in Ryazan, Russia.
These ammonites were preserved under low oxygen conditions which favoured the precipitation of the iron sulfide (FeS) mineral pyrite, also known as fool's gold, which replaced and grew around the ammonites shell.
The quenstedoceras fossil ranges in sizes very small to very arge. Due to the fossilization with the iron pyrite they can be quite heavy.

These beautiful fossils have a striking white/ pink coloured, iridescent shell. In many cases when the quenstedoceras's shell falls off, you will see their inside chambers fossilized with the iron pyrite. Many of these specimens have been cut and polished to reveal their stunning inner structure. These chambers with the pyrite crystals inside are extremely rare. On occasion these pieces are made into jewellery.
Come on into our stores and check out the rest of our selection or for any inquires feel free to email us at sales@rocksandgemscanada.com

Colourful Ammonite, Fossils, Ammonites, Rocks and Gems Canada

Fossil Friday!
Wine, cheese, ammonites... Some things just get better with age!
Ammonites, found worldwide, are extinct marine animals that closely resemble the modern day squid. It's spiral shape symbolizes continual change and evolution.
This iridescent beauty is found in Madagascar and is approximately 65 million - 135 million years old.

Less then 1% of the ammonites found around the world have colour on them. This makes the colourful ammonites sought after by collectors.
Some believe that the fiery colour is a manifestation of the millions of years of energy, power and good luck stored within the ammonite. The Feng shui beliefs tell us that these colourful ammonites may be used for meditation.

DragonEgg RocksandGemsCanada

We welcome new into our store, the Septarian Dragon Egg.

Just like our Septarian Nodules, they are a mud concretion as a result of volcanic eruptions. They formed on ancient sea beds 50-70 million years ago in Madagascar and fossilize with different minerals such as calcite and aragonite to create the intriguing texture of the geode. A lot of work goes into digging the septarians, cutting, polishing and preparing the perfect pieces to display.

Rare Fossilized Specimen

Rare Fossilized Specimen

Plecia Fly, Rocks and Gems Canada, Insects, Fossil

It's Fossil Friday!

Fossilized insects are extremely rare to find, especially the Plecia Fly that have just arrived new to our stores!
The Plecia fly is found in the green river formation of Wyoming, USA and range from 40-50 million years old. As the insect contains no hard shell, the insect must fall into water and be covered with sediment to fossilize. Thus, there are very few insect specimens as a bizarre set of coincidences must occur in order for the insect to fossilize.
Come into our store and choose from our wide variety of specimens or visit our website www.rocksandgemscanada.com May you enjoy your fossil as it's a scientific find as well as a link to our distant past. These fossils are to be treasured and preserved for our future generations.

Under The Sea

Under The Sea

It's Fossil Friday!

Did you know that the sea urchin and the sand dollar belong to the same family? Echinoderms also include sea stars and sea cucumbers. They are marine invertebrates with a water-vascular system. They have been living in the seas for about 450 million years. The flower on the surface of the fossil is the outline of the creature's pores and the center of it is where its mouth was. Some of them lived buried deep in muddy sediment, where they fed on microscopic organisms to survive, while others adapted their diet to their environment.

It is a sedimentary rock that some believe contains fossilized swamp, wood, and algae. These were then covered by volcanic ash, and fossilized over time into these amazing colors! This process ages the stone to be around 11-14 million years old! Gary Jasper is said to bring joy into ones life and is a helpful stone for spreading joy to others as well. P.S we also have Gary Jasper jewelry!
